ASPIRE League ActivitiesStudent ExchangesFostering the young talent that will be able to tackle importantissues in today’s global society is one of the League’sobjectives. In pursuit of this common goal, member universitiesare encouraged to provide educational opportunities to thestudents of other member universities. The League offersvarious academic and cultural exchange opportunities, such asthe ASPIRE Undergraduate Research Academy (UGRA) andthe ASPIRE E-Olympics.Research Collaboration and Satellite LaboratoriesResearch Collaboration is one of the key activities of the League.The ASPIRE grant and satellite laboratories represent one uniquemodel of this collaboration. Offered for research involving TokyoTech and two or more member universities, the grant hassupported 20 collaborations since 2011 and encouragedparticipants to open their labs to one another as satellite labs.ASPIRE ForumThe ASPIRE Forum is the annual gathering of vicepresidents, faculty, staff, and students of memberuniversities. The Forum consists of a symposium, a studentworkshop, and a meeting of the vice presidents.Researchers from the member universities givepresentations at the symposium. The theme of thesymposium varies each year, but it generally focuses onissues in science, technology, and sustainability. Thestudent workshop is organized to facilitate the sharing ofideas and to deepen understanding of common issues inAsia.
Message from the ChairpersonProfessorER Meng HwaSenior AdvisorNanyang Technological University,SingaporeSince its inception in 2009, the ASPIRE League has beenpromoting intellectual discourse and research collaborationsamong its five member universities. Strong commitments frommember universities have seen the League's academic activitiesgrown in both depth and scope. These include the annual ASPIREForum where the Vice Presidents, professors and postgraduatestudents come together to share research insights and findings,ASPIRE League Research Grant activities, and also a three-dayenrichment programme, Undergraduate Research Academy, forthe undergraduate students who are doing a research projectrelated to energy and sustainability. Such convictions andcollaborative efforts from member universities have allowed theLeague to achieve its aim of being a regional hub for academicexcellence and innovation as witnessed by the increase in jointpublications and citation impacts among the five memberuniversities. Moving forth, I am confident that all memberuniversities will continue to strive for excellence and remaincommitted to the League to become a reputable platform foracademic exchanges and research collaborations in Asia andbeyond. I look forward to working with member universities toadvance the common objective of the League.
The Hong Kong University of Science and TechnologyThe Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is aresearch-focused university with a key mission to develop science andtechnology to contribute to the Hong Kong economy. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and TechnologyKAIST is the first and foremost science and technology research university inKorea, founded by the government in 1971. KAIST aims to competitiveresearch convergence based on scientific and technological innovations andglobalization. Nanyang Technological UniversityNanyang Technological University is a young, research-intensiveuniversity on a rapid global rise.
